Hunting in New Mexico is a popular dream for many. Elk hunting in New Mexico takes it up a notch!

 

      With over 1.2 million acres of pristine forest, the Lincoln National Forest offers some of the best hunting in New Mexico. The Lincoln National Forest is rich in wild game including elk, deer, antelope, turkey, bear and cougar. Porfessional outfitters are available to lead hunts and help with your hunting needs.

Military Reservations:

      Hunting in New Mexico is allowed on some military reservtions through cooperation of the U.S. Department of Defence, which controls acess to these areas. Hunters must obtain permission and conditions of acess to these military reservations directly from each reservation. Hunters on military properties must wear at least 244 square inches of blaze orange (approximately the size of a hunting vests. The military may close portions of Units 10,13,18,19,20 and 28 for safety reasons. Do to security concerns, the Director of the Deptartment of Game and Fish may change or cancel all hunting in New Mexico on such lands.
ALL hunters on McGregor Ranger/Fort Bliss are required to have proof of passing a certified hunter education course prior to hunting. McGregor Range/Fort Bliss does not allow trapping.

Kirtland Air Force Base Hunting in New Mexico:

      The base does not allow trespass within the fenced area.


Other Areas:

      All of Los Alamos County is closed to trapping, except the northern quarter of the county and a strip along the west bank of the Rio Grande to a line 1,000 feet below the Rio Grande canyon rim. Jornada Experimental Station in Dona Ana County is closed to all unescourted public acess. New Mexico State University Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (College Ranch) in Dona Ana County is closed to public access for hunting in New Mexico.

Law Prohibits Harassing Legal Hunters While Hunting in New Mexico:

      NMSA 1978, Chapter 17-2-7.1
New Mexico has a law prohibiting “hunter harassment” or interfering with another person who is lawfully hunting, trapping, or fishing in an area where those activities are permitted.  This includes Elk hunting New Mexico.

Hunting in New Mexico Acess to Public Lands:


      New Mexico has 9 million acres of National Forests and about 13 million acres of BLM lands. Most are open to public elk hunting New Mexico and other recreation activities. In addition, the State Game Commission has purchased an easement on state trust land for Hunting in New Mexico. It is the hunter’s responsibility to get all permit information from each agency and to know the regulations that each agency has on its managed lands. Unfortunately, all regulations of all land management agencies cannot be listed here.

      The U.S. Forest Service and BLM may close roads seasonally. In addition, there are off-road vechicle restrictions in some units of U.S. Forest Service and BLM lands. Their local offices will be able to assist you.

      Much of New Mexico’s public land is mixed in with privately owned property. The private landowner has the right to control the use of hunting in New Mexico on private land.
